Aspirin and hypertension

Any patients with fibromyalgia, high blood pressure concerns are raised. A recent study published in Archives of Internal Medicine in February 2007 showed that the typical pain medications may increase the risk of hypertension in men. These medicines include acetaminophen, aspirin and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Gloomy news for fibromyalgia patients is that these drugs are also usually prescribed to those suffering with this debilitating painful condition.

The present study involved 16 031 people, all health professionals with an average age of 64.6 years. In 2000, at the start of the study, all have had a history of hypertension. During the two years that followed, he began to take pain medications. Four years later during a follow-up, more than 1,900 people involved in the study had developed hypertension.

Study showed that those who took acetaminophen for at least six days a week increased the risk of blood high pressure 34%, while those who took aspirin with the same frequency has increased to 26%. People took NSAIDs increased their risk of high blood anyone pressure at 38%.

According to the researchers, their data support the hypothesis that painkillers may increase the risk of hypertension even when taken independently. This puts patients with fibromyalgia in a delicate position, since the first line of defense against the disorder is often pain relievers.

Is a known fact that every drug has at least one of the side effects, which can vary in severity depending on the patient. Some drugs, particularly NSAIDs, can cause problems when taken with medications for high blood pressure that contain ACE inhibitors. Also, drugs commonly prescribed for fibromyalgia, increases the risk of developing high blood pressure and do not stop with painkillers.

SSRI anti-depressants and any medications prescribed for fibromyalgia may also lead to high blood pressure, often as a result of complications or side effects. COX-II inhibitors are another type of fibromyalgia drug used to fight inflammation. It is particularly effective when present joint swelling and muscle pain. COX-II inhibitors block COX-II enzymes that regulate the production of substances called prostaglandins.

Prostaglandins are produced by cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme and are responsible for promoting the inflammatory response in the body. When prostaglandins are blocked due to the action of COX-II inhibitors, pain and swelling are off. The only problem is that COX-II inhibitors have side effects, including hypertension.

Consequence of living without pain and extreme discomfort

Despite causing pain, fibromyalgia is not a degenerative disease, nor is it a fatal disorder. However, it is a chronic condition that causes pain and fatigue that can last months or even years, so it is not uncommon to see patients with fibromyalgia take medication regularly for long periods of time.

Drugs used to treat fibromyalgia symptoms had varying degrees of success, but the key challenge for many patients at risk of developing hypertension is how to manage the symptoms of fibromyalgia blood pressure simultaneously. This makes it even more important that patients be educated about the potential risks and benefits of any treatment you consider, and take a proactive role in managing their disorder.
