Healthy food for hypertension

Help with hypertension? New studies have found that nitrates, nutrients found in green leafy vegetables such as lettuce and spinach, can actually help control blood pressure by maintaining the health of blood vessels. This may not come as a surprise to any people, especially given the fact that previous studies have found that the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, can lower blood pressure.

However, although the DASH diet had a positive effect on those with hypertension, researchers are not sure what the exact nutrients in vegetables and fruits are responsible for lowering blood pressure. Because of this, new studies were conducted that focuses on nitrate to determine if nitrate is one of the main reasons for lowering high blood pressure. A short-term study involving

17 non-smoking and healthy young adults, the observed effects of nitrate supplement had on participants. Each person was given a daily dose of nitrate supplement which equaled the amount found in 150-250 grams of vegetables rich in nitrate (IE. Lettuce, spinach, beets, etc.). They have been taking a supplement for three days, and then take a placebo daily for three different days.

Results of the study concluded that although the supplement did not reduce nitrate systolic blood pressure (the higher number of a blood pressure reading), it reduced diastolic blood pressure by an average of 3.7 mm Hg. Researchers who conducted the study found that nitrate supplement benefits were similar to those found in studies DASH were also tested on healthy individuals.

However, despite the results, it is clear that more research must be done to find out how effective supplements are nitrate in lowering blood pressure.

That said, you do not need to wait for the research to prove affect on lowering blood pressure nitrate when it is known that fruits and vegetables are an essential part of a healthy diet and are required to maintain a strong and system healthy immune. Therefore, there is no harm in adding more nitrate-rich foods to your diet and cutting back on fatty fried foods.

Nitrate can also be found in air, water and is also a preservative found in foods, including cheese, processed meat, and fish, as well as spirits and liqueurs.
